The author of this article, Dr Oliver Tearle, is a literary critic and lecturer in English at Loughborough University. To discover more about female modernist writers, see our pick of Woolf’s best novels and essays, her best short fiction, our reappraisal of May Sinclair’s fiction, our analysis of Kate Chopin’s ‘The Story of an Hour’, and our introduction to one of Woolf’s most influential essays about modernism. You can read ‘A Haunted House’, and Woolf’s other pioneering short stories, in The Mark on the Wall and Other Short Fiction (Oxford World’s Classics). But, given that final phrase, ‘The light in the heart’, it is also a love story, and – given its relative plotlessness, its brevity, and its prose-poetry style – barely a ‘story’ at all. Woolf sought to do this with ‘A Haunted House’, a story which is both a ghost story and a riposte to, or analysis of, the conventional ghostly tale.

As the buildup began, there were maddening delays. Cautious generals inexperienced, incompetent, or jealous administrators shortages of good people and supplies excess of both gloom and optimism, kept each side from swinging into decisive action. At first, it was not even much of a fight. Lincoln kept insisting, a fight to reunite the United States. It was not initially a war against slavery. And then the author reveals how the sweeping force of all-out conflict changed the war’s purpose, in turning it into a war for human freedom. This would not be the neat, short, “limited” war both sides had envisioned. First, he describes how the war slowly but steadily got out of control. In Terrible Swift Sword, Bruce Catton tells the story of the Civil War as never before-of two turning points which changed the scope and meaning of the war. The second episode in this award-winning trilogy impressively shows how the Union and Confederacy, slowly and inexorably, reconciled themselves to an all-out war-an epic struggle for freedom. Abstaining from moralizing, Freeman frames any judgments of Caesar in the context of his own time, when a reputation for clemency could be gained by cutting a man’s throat before his crucifixion. He combined a striking instinct for political power with palpable oratorical mojo, and he added the ability to cultivate an aura of military genius, sending elaborate dispatches from the battlefield that were publicly read aloud in Rome-to the disgust of his hapless political foes. Freeman stresses that while he had the audacity to challenge more senior politicians and sometimes the entire Senate, Caesar always stayed on message when courting public sentiment. Ambition and intellect drove every action his courage was obvious, though frequently calculated for maximum effect. The young Caesar who emerges here seems strikingly modern. Freeman’s willingness to venture educated guesses-clearly labeled as such-on Caesar’s early schooling and training significantly help readers apprehend a human will singularly bent on destiny. The recovered works of Suetonius, Caesar’s first biographer, do not cover his childhood in an aristocratic family lacking both influence and wealth. He intends neither to bury nor overly praise Caesar (100–44 BCE), states Freeman (Classics/Luther College The Philosopher and the Druids: A Journey Among the Ancient Celts, 2006, etc.), simply to set forth his life and times as ancient Rome’s most celebrated yet often reviled leading citizen. A fresh look at one of history’s most dynamic and controversial figures. This loss upon loss has left me feeling sad and brittle and about seven thousand years old. These facts alone make him an unlikely romantic partner for me, given that I am a professional American woman in my mid-thirties, who has just come through a failed marriage and a devastating, interminable divorce, followed immediately by a passionate love affair that ended in sickening heartbreak. To begin with, Giovanni is ten years younger than I am, and like most Italian guys in their twenties he still lives with his mother. Oh, but there are so many reasons why this would be a terrible idea. |
